My favorite morning in Charleston + Breakfast

Updated: Jul 9, 2024

This is hands down my favorite way to spend a Charleston morning.

Plus the best breakfast I have ever had in my entire life.

It's 4:30AM the holy city is still sleeping. I threw on some clothes, grabbed my keys, and drove across town to Folly Beach. It was still dark when I arrived.

The lighthouse inlet was closed. No big deal I decided to drive until I got to the gate and park in one of the side street parking areas. I rubbed the sleepy out of my eyes and walked across the little path to the beach. It was total darkness and I loved every bit of it. The only other sign of life was the whippoorwill singing his song; I instantly thought of my dad. He would sing a song about a whippoorwill while he played his guitar in the hallway between my sister's and my room. He did that most nights until we fell asleep.

Anyway, I used my flash light on my phone to make sure I didn't step on anything. Living in Florida has taught me to never take a chance with sand spurs. As I walked closer to the water I took a deep breath in making sure to inhale all of that fresh ocean air and as I exhaled I felt an immense sense of gratitude. The universe gifts us with the most incredible things.

The sun was starting to wake her sleepy glow on the horizon. I decided to walk in the direction of the sunrise towards the lighthouse. I came across a beautiful jelly fish that washed up on the sand. I really wanted to put him back in the water but I figured it was too late. As I continued walking I kept seeing more and more jellies, so many tiny little seashells, and even a small crab. The sun was slowly waking up more and her glow was filing the sky.

Going to Folly Beach before the crowds lends this feeling of abandonment and solitude that will make your entire soul feel connected to the world again.

Trust me- get there at 5:30AM at the latest and take your time exploring.

Once you have worked up an appetite take a quick trip down the road to Lost Dog Cafe.

You will not be disappointed.

When I say I had the best breakfast of my entire life I am not kidding. I ordered the Folly Benedict. It comes with one crab and one shrimp cake, both are topped with perfectly cooked poached eggs. The entire thing is drizzled with a creamy hollandaise sauce. You also get some grilled asparagus and fresh fruit. This breakfast is absolutely perfect. It's 1PM while I'm writing this and I am considering going over there to eat this for lunch. Thank goodness they serve breakfast all day!

*I had my fruit bowl brought out in a to go box. That is a whole lot of breakfast right there and I ate every single delicious bite of it.

If you try this place comment below and let me know what you thought about it.

Safe Travels,

Nat
